Swiss Celebrations
It was one of the most memorable Jaguar meetings I have been to
One of the pleasures of being a retired Jaguar designer is that periodically I am invited to be part of various Jaguar and classic car events. In September, I received, out of the blue, an invitation from the president of the Jaguar Drivers’ Club of Switzerland to be a guest of honour at their 50th celebrations to be held in Davos. As things turned out, not only was this going to be a high-altitude event but extremely high ambition, high specification, high activity and high passion too. Each activity being a really pleasant surprise.

It transpired that the club's president and his wife, Philipp and Maja Husistein, are both architects and, included in their collection of Jaguars and historic Land Rovers, is an XJ220. Plus, he was the person who bought my XJ220 wind-tunnel model, which added a personal connection to them and the event.
Davos is known for its annual economic forum and this event was centred around the lavish hotel often seen on the news. One of its garage levels was dedicated to the 94 Jaguars that had arrived for the event, which ranged from SS100s to the XJ220, so it was a fabulous collection of cars, many of which had a historic pedigree.
From the moment we arrived, activities were planned for the full three days we were there, including an opening evening which included myself and the other guest of honour, Michael Quinn, known to many Jaguar owners as Sir William Lyons’ grandson, and who has been connected to Jaguar all his life.
After pleasant informal drinks, the XJ220 was parked in the courtyard where the starting event happened. Michael and I were invited to the podium, where we were interviewed by a local journalist who was also very well versed in Jaguar history.

It became clear very early on, and constantly throughout the weekend, just how much knowledge and passion all of the attendees had for Jaguar. They seemed to be very grateful that Michael and I were there, giving it a historic link to the company. Of course, our respective presentations gave our own particular perspective to the event.
Davos is one of the highest-altitude towns in Europe and is otherwise a ski resort, so highlights of the events included organised drives around the magnificent scenery of the Swiss Alps. This included going to St Moritz, which added to the glamour of the event.

It was one of the most memorable Jaguar meetings I have been to, not just for all of the things mentioned but the ambition of the event. There were continual activities organised for all three days of the event. And because it was in Switzerland, things worked like clockwork. People were charming, passionate and it was one of the most enjoyable events I have been to. I have been fortunate to have been invited to many. I suppose, for those of us who have been part of the company, it was a very visible example of the international passion for Jaguar.
